Piano transcriptions of vocal and orchestral music were popular in the nineteenth century, and Franz Liszt made practically an industry of them. Clara Schumann's transcriptions of her husband Robert's songs, unlike many transcriptions of the period, stick closely to the score, preserving their restrained beauty. Cord Garbens's concern in this recording has been a close adherence to the song's character. With the exception of "Freisinn" and "Schöne Fremde," two songs less apt for transcription, all of Clara Schumann's thirty arrangements are performed in this recording.
